Troubleshooting your RAM

When you see a memory error in the system, it is not always necessary that it may be due to a RAM fault but the worst part of it is that an unstable system maybe the result of a RAM failure. Now to troubleshoot your PC for a RAM failure, follow these steps:
  1. The first step in carrying on with any measures is to backup all your data. Do this first if you have not already done it and continue with the following steps.
  2. First try and analyze your problem. Answer these questions to yourself. Have you installed a new RAM currently? Has it been properly installed? Have you installed any new hardware that may subsequently affect your RAM? Have you checked whether the RAM modules have not become loose? Does the RAM you use match with the configuration supported for your motherboard? When the computer starts, doe it show the correct amount of RAM installed on your system? If you have multiple RAMs installed on your system, are the frequencies of your RAMs the same/
  3. When you have analyzed the problem, check if the RAM(s) is/are installed properly and are not loose in their slots.
  4. Now remove the RAM modules from their slots and clean out the dust that would have accumulated on the slots. Clean the RAM surface as well.
  5. Now reseat the RAM modules in their proper slots. You will hear a click sound when they are in their proper place.
  6. If you are still experiencing problems, do the following. Try by changing the RAM slots. Install the RAM module in a different slot than where it was earlier installed.
  7. If you have changed a RAM try changing back to your original configuration. See if it works.
  8. If none of your RAMs is being recognized, try resetting the BIOS of your motherboard.
  9. Check for viruses on your system as some viruses cause problems that would look like memory errors.
  10. If you have tried all the above steps, then you may have a damaged module of RAM. Try reaching out for a hardware technician and ask him to check your RAM.
