Troubleshooting the Hard disk drive

There are a variety of problems that you might face due to a faulty hard disk drive. Not all can be discussed by me but I will try to cover the most common and frequent problems that you may face. I will first write out the symptoms that you may be facing then the corrective measure.

* When You see messages like "retry, ignore, abort, cannot read sector". These indicate the presence of bad sectors that may have developed on your HDD. Formatting of your hard drive and re installation of the OS will help you cope up with such a problem.

* When you see slow disk access times, it may be due to fragmentation of the data on your hard disk. Fragmentation refers to inefficient use of disk storage. It results in slowing down of PC and slow access times. It may also result in loss of disk space. To deal with such problems, use the utilities provided by the Windows operating system. Run chkdisk to check all hard disk drives installed on your system. Then run disk defragmenter to defragment the partitions on your HDD. Then use disk cleanup to remove all junk data pieces present on the HDD.

* If you find that the LED related to the hard disk drive is not responding on starting of the PC, then try checking the cables attached to the HDD. These will include the power cable connected and the cable attached for data transfer.

* In case the HDD will not bootup, use the following steps to boot your PC. You can boot your PC from a startup disk. If you do not have a startup disk you can create one easily. You can use the HP Format tool to create a USB startup disk. This disk will help you boot from the USB drive. When you are ready with command prompt interface type DIR C: If you see the directories of C drive of your HDD, then try to make the C drive bootable by typing sys a: c: This shoul make your PC boot from your Hard disk drive.

* If on following the above steps, you still are not satisfied with the performance of your installed HDD, then try contacting the manufacturer of your HDD. Most of the HDD come with enough warranties and you should get your HDD replaced without much of a difficulty. The companies provide excellent customer service.
